Loreen - Euphoria

Someone take this song away from me. I can’t stop listening to it. It is crack. If your favorite gay club doesn’t play this song to death over the Summer, the DJ at the club should be fired.

Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton - Islands in the Stream
Beyond the Bee Gees place in music history as one of the most prolific acts of the 70’s, the Brothers Gibb were also one of pop music’s most gifted song writing teams. After the “death” of disco, the Bee Gees “sound” fell out of favor with the general public, but for a large chunk of the 80’s, they STILL ruled the pop charts by writing monster hits for other artists. It was as if we couldn’t admit to ourselves that we still loved the Bee Gees sound by actually buying Bee Gees albums, but we got our fix in this second-hand way by making number one hits from anything they wrote for other artists and no hit was bigger than this Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton duet. Selling over two million copies in 1983 alone, it would finish the year as 1983’s biggest hit.

R.I.P. … Robin Gibb.

Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love

When asked in a 2010 interview what music he would like played at his funeral, Robin Gibb said that he’d like some Mozart and also “How Deep Is Your Love.”

I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You’re the light in my deepest, darkest hour
You’re my savior when I fall

And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do

The underrated jam of all jams. Lyrically perfect. R.I.P. Robin Gibb.

Donna Summer - I Feel Love (12’” Single)
RIP, Donna Summer. One of the singers from my childhood that basically shaped the kind of music I’ve loved all my life. Unfairly dismissed as part of the “disco” era, Donna Summer has never really gotten her due as a singer, but make no mistake, her vocals slay every song she sings, a voice that is pristine and powerful.

And here is my favorite Donna Summer song. Up until a few months ago, I only had the single edit to this song, which clocks in at 3:47, but after getting my hands on this, I don’t know how I ever lived without it. This song needs to be heard in its 8:17 version, if only because it brings to mind dancing at a smokey club at two in the morning in 1978 … as it should. This Giorgio Moroder masterpiece (and IT IS a masterpiece) ushered in a new era of dance music. I’d argue that this is the most important dance record of the past 40 years and, maybe, one of the most important songs ever. Whenever I post this song, I always defer to a story told by David Bowie about Brian Eno:

One day in Berlin … Eno came running in and said, ‘I have heard the sound of the future.’ … he puts on ‘I Feel Love’, by Donna Summer … He said, ‘This is it, look no further. This single is going to change the sound of club music for the next fifteen years.’ Which was more or less right.

RIP Donna Summer. Legend.

Kate Miller-Heidke - Nightflight
This song is currently on repeat. The title track off Kate Miller-Heidke’s fourth album, this song will be the theme to long air travel for the rest of time with clever lines like “if one more person coughs on me .. I’m gonna punch them in the face.” Unfortunately, like most amazing things, I don’t think any of Kate Miller-Heidke’s albums have been released legally in the U.S., but she is worth trying to find. Her music plays wonderful pictures set to beautiful melodies. I mean, this song may be one of the favorite songs of the year and it is about air travel!!

Body Movin’ - Beastie Boys

Much respect to License to Ill, Check Your Head and Paul’s Boutique, but Hello Nasty has some tasty cuts, like this one which has been on repeat since yesterday.

I’m Going Down - Megan Hilty

The song which convinces me Megan Hilty should do an R&B album because she pretty much kills this in a way that I didn’t think anyone could kill it, equaling the killing Mary J.Blige did when she covered the song back in 1994.
