50 Favorite OTPs: John Luther/Alice Morgan - Luther

Alice: Yes, you do. “The mind is it’s own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.” The universe isn’t evil, John. It’s just indifferent. That hasn’t changed. It can’t. But what I did for you proved something to me. Something I hadn’t… believed until that moment.John: What?Alice: It’s you who’s right. There is love in the world.

It probably says a lot about me that this relationship intrigues me so much, but I can’t help it. DCI John Luther meets Alice Morgan during the murder investigation of her parents. It become apparent that Alice Morgan committed the crime, but John Luther just can’t prove it. All great love stories should have a “meet cute” like this. In Alice Morgan, John Luther finds his equal and his opposite, the Catwoman to his Batman. He understands Alice in a way that she has never been understood before which, of course, peaks Alice’s interest in John. Because John knows exactly who she is and what she has done, she drops all pretense and just is herself around him, a luxury that Alice has probably never been afforded. John Luther isn’t scared of what he sees in the deep abyss that is Alice. Alice sees that same abyss in John. Luther is so consumed by doing right by the victims of violent crimes that he allows himself to do the wrong things. Alice and John are both so focused, so driven that it blinds them to consequences even though they are driven by completely different traits - Alice by an absence of morals, Luther by a strict code of them. This is why they are drawn to each other. I adore that their relationship is developed throughout series one through conversations. In Alice, Luther finds someone he can just talk to, unguarded, about the things that haunt him. He finds himself trusting Alice more and more. By the end of the series, trusting a killer that has never lied to you because vitally important when up against a best mate who has lied to you about everything. Their relationship boils down to trust and honesty and because that is so strong, it defies all the logic that says they shouldn’t be. One of the other aspects of this relationship I love is that it plays with some very basic notions of love and turns them on their head. Alice and John see each other for exactly who they are. Exactly. Yet, because they are on opposite sides of the law and of the spectrum, it becomes an impediment to their relationships. Also, I also love that Alice would do anything for John and with a figure like Alice Morgan … a “I’d do anything for you” statement of love is just about the scariest thing she could ever say because we all know - and John is painfully aware - that she means it. When he calls upon her help at the end of series two, we know the threat John makes that Alice might visit his nemesis is very real. Alice Morgan would come and kill you in the middle of the night to make sure you don’t hurt John. It’s frightening and … dare I say it … romantic. The show has used a lot of space/physics metaphors - matter/anti-matter, blackholes and such - and I feel like this describes John and Alice. Their relationship has its own gravity, they are two cosmic bodies in constant orbit, forever together yet forever apart and if they do ever collide, the universe would shake with a release of energy so great, it would destroy everything, but what an awesome destruction it would be. With the series officially renewed for another series, I have no idea what will happen between these two. Will their cosmic, gravitational dance go on forever or will they collide? Your guess is as good as mine.

50 Favorite OTPs: Clark Kent/Superman/Lois Lane - Superman Universe

Lois: I wanted these vows to be perfect, but perfection’s a hard thing to get your hands on. But life is meant to be a little messy. And when it comes to love, I think it’s like my dad always said about the Army. “You only sign up if it’s the only thing you could ever imagine doing.” And, Clark, I can not imagine spending a moment of my life without you. So I promise that I will always have your back, as you will always have mine. You’re my best friend, you’re my home, and you’re my true love. And I am yours and will be forever.Clark: I, Clark Kent, take you, Lois Lane, to be my companion… forever. With you by my side, I will never be alone. Though the world sees a strong and independent woman, I’ve never known someone with such gentle grace and more pure heart. When I’ve been lost, you’ve always been there to bring me back. So on this day, at this moment, I pledge the rest of my life to you. You’ve always believed in me, and I believe in you. And when you believe in someone, it’s not for a minute or just for now. It’s forever.

I love every single incarnation of Clark and Lois (well, Superman Returns was lacking, but we’ll just forget it exists). When Superman turns back time in Superman: The Movie to save Lois Lane’s life, it was one of the greatest moments of in my shipping life. For Clark/Superman, a world without Lois Lane is a world that should not be, so, of course, he must break the laws of time and space, defy the very laws of the universe to bring her back. There were no other options. That is the definition of epic love. When I think of Clark and Lois nowadays, however, I immediately think of Smallville’s version of their relationship simply because it is the most realized, most satisfying version of their love story. Clark and Lois’s relationship makes much more sense because we’ve witnessed their journey for six years from bickering frenemies to good friends to soulmates and that journey was wonderfully rewarding. Smallville had the luxury of knowing that Clark and Lois were endgame and had six years to develop a relationship. When Lois came to Smallville, her passionate intensity were grating to Clark who was used to women who were less … abrasive. But through the years, he came to rely on her (brutal) honesty and her ability to cut through the crap. He never felt the need to hide around her or pretend to be something he wasn’t. For Lois, Clark brought some much needed stability to her life. Over the years, he was always there, whatever she needed and didn’t run when others might have cut their losses and left. When season eight finally rolled around and their growing attraction started to boil over, it felt right, it felt earned. There was no one else for Clark than Lois. There was no one else for Lois than Clark. And together, they could conquer anything.

50 Favorite OTPs: Mary Crawley/Matthew Crawley - Downton Abbey

Lady Mary Crawley: Dear Lord, I don’t pretend to have much credit with you. I’m not even sure that you’re there [she looks at a photograph of Matthew] But if you are, and if I’ve ever done anything good, I beg you to keep him safe.

SO MANY FEELINGS. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a show that has sparked so much irrational emotions in me. I have irrationally sobbed at many moments during the second series of Downton Abbey and most of those moments had to do with this couple, a couple I ship so hard, I think I strain muscles just thinking about them. When last we left Mary and Matthew in series one, Matthew rejected Mary. They loved each other, completely, but he was hurt that she came to him only after it was clear he would inherit Downton. Bad form, Mary. When we met Mary and Matthew again in series two, Matthew has moved on with a wonderfully sweet woman and Mary has got herself a guy who is the exact opposite of Matthew .. in other words, bad news. I won’t go about spoiling series two for those Americans who are patiently waiting for the show to premiere on PBS in a couple of months, but I will say that Matthew makes Mary a better person. Loving him has made her a better person, more willing to look outside herself and see how her actions and inaction help/hurt others. I couldn’t have seen series one Mary doing half the things series two Mary does for the man she loves, for her family. Matthew will never stop loving Mary. She is the one for him.

50 Favorite OTPs: Han Solo/Princess Leia - The Star Wars Trilogy

Han Solo: Don’t get excited.Princess Leia: Captain, being held by you isn’t quite enough to get me excited.Han Solo: Sorry sweetheart. I haven’t got time for anything else.

Is there any better dynamic in romance than two people who loathe each other learning to love each other? Probably not. Because I am a child of the 80’s, one of the first time I remember seeing this dynamic play out and it having an effect on me and by “effect”, I mean “shipping this like nothing else in the universe”, I will always have a special place in my heart for these two. Leia hated that an arrogant, scruffy looking nerd herder with little scruples could get so much under her skin, but there Han was, getting completely and totally under her skin. Perhaps, she could see, could feel that beneath all that bravado was a decent, nice, loving guy who would give up his life for her if she asked and even if she didn’t ask. Han isn’t an easy man to get along with, but Leia could take his crap and toss it back at him. Even though he would probably never admit it, Han loved her for that. She would never let him get away with ANYTHING and he wouldn’t change that side of her for anything in the world, no matter how much he complains about it. I loved that he saved her. She saved him. He never took her crap. She never took his. He expressed his feelings when it matter. She expressed hers when it mattered. It was a marriage of equals, two strong personalities and strong wills that constantly sparked off each other. You know these two would bicker right through their years and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

50 Favorite OTPs: Jeff Winger/Annie Edison - Community

Jeff: You’re very important to me..

I will be the first to admit that shipping this as much as I do is probably more wrong than right and that if I was a decent human being, I’d run screaming from this relationship, but, thankfully, I am anything but decent. It isn’t so much that there is an age different because twelve years isn’t that big of an age gap, but it is that Annie, at the moment, is just too young. She isn’t even old enough to drink yet. YOUNG! She is a girl not yet a woman, so Jeff Winger moving in on that action is just wrong … YET… As someone who has been raised on TV tropes, I’ve been taught to believe that opposites attract. It is a law of physics. It is a law of television. Jeff and Annie are exact opposites and in TV terms that means they will always have this tension between them that has the possibility of something more. Annie is decent and good in every way that Jeff is not. Jeff is selfish and confident in every way that Annie is not. For Jeff, Annie is his moral compass. If he disappoints her, he knows he is being a jerk. For Annie, Jeff pulls her out of her comfort zone and allows her to see that life isn’t so black and white. It’s a messy kind of gray. In the season one finale, Jeff tells Annie that when he is with Britta, he feels like his real self and when he was with Professor Slater, he felt like the man he could be. I would argue that with Annie, Jeff is both of these at the same time. Annie accepts him for who he is, douchebag, selfish jerky tendencies and all, but she pushes him to be a better man. She is the “good angel” on his shoulder telling him he can change and be more willing to do the right thing, but I don’t think Annie would ever ask him to change. Now that the show has played with this dynamic for two seasons, I am still not quite sure where it is headed. Personally, I think Jeff and Annie need to just have sex to release all their pent up sexual frustration and then move on from there. Annie is still growing and still changing so, who knows, in two years time, she may “outgrow” Jeff. Or maybe “grow into” Jeff. Oh god, that sounds wrong, but you know what I mean.

50 Favorite OTPs: Dana Scully/Fox Mulder - The X-Files

Scully: Mulder, you think I don’t understand but, I do. This stubbornness of yours, it’s why I fell in love with you.

It will always be Mulder and Scully. Always. Thrown together by the FBI (thanks, guys), they became better versions of themselves by being around each other. Scully’s frustrating rationalism. Mulder’s obsessive fantasticism. Put them together and one would think it would be like oil and water, but it wasn’t like that. They were two puzzle pieces that fit together and neither one of them made as much sense apart than they did when they were together. When the world was falling apart, when there was nothing left to hold on to, it was always Mulder and Scully … until the end of time, end of the world, ends of the Earth. One of my favorite Mulder speeches (if not my absolute favorite) is when he called Scully “his constant” because that is exactly what they were to each other … a constant and nothing and no force could come between them once their relationship was set in motion. Part of the glee I have with this relationship was that their enemies threw them together and inadvertently created the unit that would thwart their plans for world domination at every turn. Scully and Mulder have been in love forever, even if they only had the guts to admit it to each other years after it happened. These two are the best quirky, wonderful couple.

50 Favorite OTPs: Britta Perry/Troy Barnes - Community

Troy: You’re really cool, Britta.

Britta Perry is attracted to broken men and she needs a man who has a good heart and would do anything to make her happy … and keep her crazy in check. Troy Barnes needs someone who will challenge him, but never judge him and someone who doesn’t mind sharing him with Abed. Britta and Troy … we all know this would be absolutely adorable. Britta wouldn’t know what to do with someone who respects her and her crazy and genuinely wants to make her happy. Yes, Britta and Troy would be hilarious to watch. Britta and Troy, for all their craziness and all the ways they are so different, do have this very easy relationship. Their time together in the bathroom “Remedial Chaos Theory” is a perfect illustration of this. Troy can be himself around Britta and she doesn’t judge. He feels the freedom to say anything to her, perhaps, because, until now their relationship has been expectation free. While Troy doesn’t exactly understand Britta most of the time, he does possess attributes that would be good for Britta to be around - a cynical free view of life and the ability to just have fun without fear for what having that fun would actually mean. And, really, wouldn’t you love to see Britta and Troy trying to hide their feelings from the group and failing miserably at very single turn.

50 Favorite OTPs: Bianca Montgomery/Marissa Tasker - All My Children

Marissa: And I lied before. I am not falling in love with you. I’m already there. And yeah, I just said that out loud. I can’t promise to always know what I’m doing or that I won’t step backward when I’m trying to move forward but I really want to see where this goes.

FINALLY. After ten plus years on All My Children, my poor, beloved, lovely Bianca has gotten a romance worthy of how sweet and fantastic she is. FINALLY, someone was brave enough to choose Bianca, to want to be with Bianca, to love Bianca and it was cutest romance in soaps in a while. But wait, let me backtrack for second… I will admit that this wasn’t the best written or best executed soap romance I’ve seen, but given the amount of obstacles it had to over come to just plain work, it feels like a feat worthy of the gods. The biggest obstacle, of course, was finding someone who could fill the shoes of Eden Riegel, the actress who played Bianca the longest, but Christina Bennett Lind has far surpassed my wildest expectations to become, dare I say it, a more complete version of Bianca Montgomery. Make no mistake, Eden will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart, but over the last ten months Lind showed just how good she was at making the character her own but keeping Bianca the same - the sweet and lovely woman who will always put the well being of others above her own, but if you poke the mighty KANE bear that lives within her … WATCH OUT, she will fuck your shit up. But let’s get to the romance, a combination of all the missed opportunities the show had over the years to make a Bianca romance interesting. J.R. and Bianca were always prime rivals - the good rich kid vs. the bad rich kid - so injecting a woman between them was just plain logically for maximum soap drama. While Marissa wasn’t as well developed as I would have liked to make this romance the best thing ever, she was still someone so absolutely perfect for Bianca, it was like they were made for each other. Marissa loves family, fights fiercely for what she believes in, had a twin sister… PERFECT FOR BIANCA. As the romance developed - at a rapid pace in soap’s ordinary glacially movement - the chemistry between the two actresses really sold this storyline. When they just looked each other, even when they were still “just friends”, there was always something more, something beautifully tender between them. It was adorable to watch.
